"They" are apparently malevolent extradimensional entities, though whether this refers to a specific alien race or a broad class of hostile races is unknown. What we can surmise about "Them" is mostly taken from the mad rantings of Science Officer Bukowski during an exploration of the ruins on the Androsynth homeworld. Bukowski, having reconstructed the computer records at various Androsynth research stations, learned about the Androsynth efforts in Inter-Dimensional Fatigue and their contact with an alien life-form from another dimension. After ten hours of examining the intact computer records in the third set of ruins, he became noticeably agitated. Bukowski then proceeded to destroy the computer records out of fear of "Them". According to the lander crew report:
:HE SAID THAT NO ONE COULD EVER KNOW WHAT HE HAD LEARNED. THAT JUST KNOWING WAS ENOUGH TO ALERT `THEM'
:HE KEPT TALKING ABOUT 'THEM', CRAZY STUFF, SIR, ABOUT HOW 'THEY' COULD SEE HIM NOW, AND 'THEY' WERE MOVING TOWARD HIM. THEN BUKOWSKI STARTED THRASHING AROUND THE ROOM, SCREAMING THAT HE HAD TO DESTROY EVERYTHING BEFORE 'THEY' SAW US TOO.
Though skeptical of Bukowski's claims, Ensign Hawthorne of the lander crew admits that Bukowski appears to be in worse shape and more cut up than when they subdued him, possibly implying physical harm inflicted by "Them".

The cryptic Arilou also mention, but refuse to name, hostile extradimensional entities, referring to these beings simply as They. These nameless creatures are described as parasites that would like to find the Humans, which the Arilou imply would be disastrous for the human race. Similar to Bukowski's warnings, the Arilou claim that ignorance is the best protection against these unknown "creatures who dwell Beyond". The Arilou further intimate that the destruction of the Androsynth civilization may have been because the Androsynth exposed themselves to extradimensional creatures identical or similar to "Them", and warn The Captain about Humans following a similar path to destruction.

Some believe that "They" are none other than the Orz. This explanation is based upon the Orz's present location in old Androsynth space, their reactions when questioned about the Androsynth, and the Orz and Arilou comments on *smell*/"smell". And indeed, it has been confirmed that the Orz is part of "Them".1
Epsilon Scorpii I is the homeworld of the Mycon, although, as the Mycon are biological constructs, they did not evolve on a specific planet and so do not have a homeworld in the traditional sense of the term. Being a Shattered World, this planet was likely a Water World originally that was transformed by a Mycon Deep Child. Like the other Shattered Worlds, the only life on this planet is the Mycon themselves.

Their homeworld has a unique place in Mycon philosophy. They refer to the planet as the "source of Juffo-Wup" and the place from which "Juffo-Wup springs forth."1 However, why this world is considered the source of Juffo-Wup is never explained, though it is possible that it is the place of their creation.

The Deep Child is a specialized, genetically engineered Mycon spore pod. Unlike the typical Mycon, a Deep Child is about 25 meters tall when it hatches from its "egg." The Deep Children aggressively terraform planets for expanding the Mycon's Sphere of Influence. Most of the information on the Deep Children comes from analysis of the Deep Child Egg Case Fragments, the Syreen account of the destruction of Syra, and comments from the Arilou, Druuge, Melnorme, and the Mycon themselves.

A Birthing Fleet, also known as an "implantation fleet", usually accompanies the Deep Child to the intended planet, protecting and assisting it in its inert form. While a Birthing Fleet is present at the attempt to colonize the Organon star system, the Syreen did not mention any unknown alien fleets when Syra was attacked. After the Birthing Fleet launches the spore pod at the planet, the egg case glows white as the Deep Child speeds through the atmosphere, possibly the same thing that the Mycon call spears of light (or "Spears of Light" in the Syreen dialogue). The Deep Child strikes the planet with so much force that solid rock flows like liquid. The egg case that allows the Deep Child to survive the impact is discarded as the Deep Child penetrates through the planet's crust. The Deep Child burrows down to Mohorovichich Discontinuity, the transitional area between the crust and the mantle, hence the name "dwellers in the Mohorovichic."

Once embedded beneath the crust, the Deep Child grows several fibrous tendrils in all directions. These tendrils then thrust upwards, creating huge calderas all across the planet surface. This process can take anywhere from a few months to a full year. From the huge calderas, the planet's atmosphere is filled with clouds of super-heated steam and sulfuric acid. The planetary crust is completely broken apart, and hot magma flows across the surface in large rivers. No longer a vibrant Water World, the new Shattered World is ready for Mycon colonization.

__NOTOC__
Juffo-Wup is a concept, almost religious in nature, which the Mycon often mention along with the Non and the Void. Together with the Deep Children and Spears of Light, these phrases are the major portions of what other races term the religious litany of the Mycon. Since most Mycon conversations soon degenerate into seemingly incoherent ramblings, the true meaning continues to remain a mystery. Many of the ramblings and responses of the Mycon mention Juffo-Wup, so it may be possible to learn something about this concept. However, the mostly non sequitur (or apparently non sequitur) responses make it difficult to accurately determine all aspects of the concept of Juffo-Wup. It has been revealed that Juffo-Wup is the result of the corruption of the original Mycon programming by the Creators.1

Void and Non
Invariably the Mycon frequently mention the Void and the Non along with Juffo-Wup. The Void is usually taken to mean interstellar space, similar to how the Slylandro and the Spathi sometimes use the word. For the Mycon, the Void is also associated with the destruction of the Non, effectively turning the Non into empty space. The Non refers to anything that isn't a part of Juffo-Wup (Non-Juffo-Wup), or rather all non-Mycon races. The Mycon, as agents of Juffo-Wup, seek to either turn the Non into Void or Juffo-Wup. They claim that their ultimate goal is to turn all Non and all Void into Juffo-Wup, though what this means is unknown.

Mycon quotes concerning Juffo-Wup
The following are some of the ramblings that the Mycon make in reference to Juffo-Wup:
Nature
*Darkness is Void; Juffo-Wup is light.
*Juffo-Wup is the hot light in the darkness. All else is unfulfilled Void. The source of Juffo-Wup is at 629.1, 220.8.2
*Juffo-Wup flows through Time and Space. It cannot be stopped by mere energy blasts.
*Juffo-Wup is the power of life... hot warmth in the cold Void. It flows through all things, binding them together, making them one. You are Non-Juffo-Wup, you cannot understand.
*Juffo-Wup is All... omni-existent, spreading and changing the Non into Juffo-Wup. You are the Non, who must become Juffo-Wup or Void.
*Juffo-Wup is inevitable.

Mycon
*We are the Mycon. We are part of Juffo-Wup.
*The Deep Children are part of Juffo-Wup -- home builders.
*We are the agents of Juffo-Wup. We are the Mycon.
*We look to Juffo-Wup for direction, and it provides the pattern -- endless expansion with purity of achievement and intolerance of error.
*We do not interpret the will of Juffo-Wup. Only the source is so empowered. Until instructed otherwise, Juffo-Wup requires that we remain here.
*Juffo-Wup fills in my fibers and I grow turgid. Violent action ensues.

Non
*You are Non -- not part of Juffo-Wup.
*You are Non-Juffo-Wup, you cannot understand.
*Juffo-Wup is All, but you are not a part of Juffo-Wup, therefore you must cease existence. We shall make you cease to exist, for Juffo-Wup.
*You impede the flow of Juffo-Wup through the Universe. We will now remove this clog. We will now aid Juffo-Wup by eliminating you!.
*You are an obstruction to Juffo-Wup. You must be removed.
*When we encounter the Non, we must absorb the Non or reject the Non so that it is no longer Non.
*Juffo-Wup acknowledges the existence of un-Voidable Non. When we are faced with such, we join, absorb and wait for our opportunity to learn the weakness that will allow us to Void the Non.
*Perhaps, if we were to plant spore sacs in your brain organ and let its tendrils spread through your flesh, then you would truly understand Juffo-Wup... become part of Juffo-Wup.
*However, you are Non -- not part of Juffo-Wup. You CAN be destroyed by energy blasts. Let us demonstrate.

Places and objects
*The Juffo-Wup is strong in this place.
*The source of Juffo-Wup is at 629.1, 220.8.
*This is a special place, filled with Juffo-Wup. But it is not the source. Juffo-Wup springs forth from 629.1, 220.8.
*Below is the pod of Juffo-Wup -- there for a thousand centuries.
*You have taken something from us which we value... which is important to Juffo-Wup. Return the Solar Manipulator immediately!

Propagation and completion
*Acceptable new worlds are a priority for the rapid and complete spread of Juffo-Wup.
*A single spore lands, finds nourishment in decay and soon attains maturity... In turn it exhales a cloud of life, a thousand spores land... so progresses Juffo-Wup.
*When Juffo-Wup is complete, when, at last, there is no Void or Non, when the Creators return, then we can finally rest.
