Star Contol: Origins is both the fourth game in the Star Control franchise and a reboot of it. It takes place in a different universe from previous Star Control games in order to provide a fresh story timeline to work with. It is being developed by Stardock Entertainment for the PC Windows platform, with editions for XBox One and Playstation 4 and Switch expected to be released later. The game is currently in development. A public Beta of its combat mode, "Fleet Battles", is currently in beta with the final release of the full game in summer 2018.

Concept
Star Control: Origins is a space role-playing game which puts the player in command of Earth's prototype interstellar ship. The game features both hyperspace and solar system travel, with a third person lander mode for resource collection and exploration of planetary bodies. Combat between aliens is handled via a top down 2D arcade-style combat system dubbed "Fleet Battles" in which each ship has a range of attack powers and abilities. Fleet Battles is available as an external mode as well, with the additional option of allowing the player to design their own ships.

Plot
Star Control: Origins takes place in the year 2088. Humanity is contacted by a species of aliens known as the Tywom, who claim they have been protecting us from a sinister evil empire known as the Scryve, who have domain over this region of the galaxy. As the player explores the immediate stars around earth they meet a wide cast of alien species, learn their histories, characteristics, and ongoing conflicts with their neighbors. The captain's mission is to prevent the Scryve from destroying the Earth through any means necessary.

Setting
Star Control: Origins takes place in an area of space known as "Orion's Spur". The player starts in a subset of this space known as the Scryve Sector which is approximately 120 by 120 light years containing hundreds of stars and thousands of worlds, each of which is unique.

Game Elements
The Command Ship
You are the captain of Earth's first prototype, interstellar starship with a mission to save the world. Star Control doesn't give you instructions on how to do that other than that it must be accomplished at all costs. Thus, a great deal of the game is focused on how you accomplish your goals, and the Command Ship is versatile which allows for great flexibility in player strategy. Through various missions, exploration and interactions you can improve your ship, gain new officers, recruit allies and gain access to many powerful abilities.

Planet Exploration
When the captain visits an alien world, they can review the world by scanning it. Scanning the planet allows the Captain to send down crew to explore the surface to acquire resources, artifacts and make contact with inhabitants. There are over 70 different planet classes and thousands of unique planets which vary greatly, and some contain life while most do not.
Screenshot.

Star System Exploration
There are several hundred star systems in the Scryve sector of Orion's Spur. When a player enters a star system they are able to navigate to planets, other ships, starbases and other elements that one would expect to find in a star system. The many alien races can be found throughout the galaxy, but most aliens will be found in their home region.

Hyperspace Navigation
The Faster-Than-Light (FTL) technology used by Star Control is called Hyperspace. In Hyperspace, the captain can travel to other star systems or intercept other ships traveling through hyperspace. The only known permanent structures within hyperspace are the mysterious Precursor Starbases. Players can upgrade their Hyperspace Drive to allow for more rapid movement throughout the galaxy, and are able to use autopilot for automated travel or jump between the Hypergate network found within the Precursor Starbases.

Fleet Battles
Encounters with hostile aliens ins inevitable, and can only be resolved in real-time combat referred to as Fleet Battles. Fleet Battles take place as a series of one-versus-one fights in a small arena, each time a ship is destroyed, the loser has to pick another ship and the battle continues until either the player or the AI runs out of ships. The player assembles a fleet throughout the campaign by recruiting human and alien ships, while the hostile alien fleets are predetermined. Fleet Battles can also be played as a separate stand-alone game including multiplayer.

Alien Contact
The captain is the only human traveling outside the home solar system, so every every contact is alien. The alignments and motivations of each race of aliens will vary, so the captain needs to careful with first contact and diplomatic contact with aliens.

Resources earned from exploring planets can be used to upgrade the player's command ship.

Screenshot.

About
Star Control games have always had a mode that lets players select a ship and take it into one-on-one battle with an opponent. In the original Star Control, the game was essentially nothing but that, with only a cursory background story that explained the existence of two factions of warring alien races (the Ur-Quan conflict).

Star Control II changed this with the addition of a rich and exciting Adventure mode, whose combat gameplay was based on the existing one-on-one combat model. This same model was also playable outside the adventure as "Super Melee," where players could choose from an array of ships from both Star Control and Star Control II and battle against a friend or computer opponent. Star Control 3 used a similar melee mode.

Star Control: Origins has a feature called "Fleet Battles" which follows roughly the same pattern. A new feature is that players will now not only be able to choose from pre-made ships, but have the option of making their own. A closed beta featuring this mode is available as of late 2017 to anyone who pre-orders the game.

Fleet Battles Stand-Alone
Fleet Battles can be played through the campaign or separately as its own stand-alone game, either single player vs AI, online, or local play with two controllers. In the Fleet Battle stand-alone, players are given a finite amount of Fleet Points which they can use to assemble a fleet. Every ship has a Fleet Point cost depending on its potency, such as a Scryve Scout costing 7 Fleet Points while a Scryve Dreadnought costs 28, so players can choose to have a small fleet with powerful ships or a vast fleet with weaker ships. Players can also create ships from scratch using the Ship Editor or download them from Steam Workshop and deploy them in Fleet Battles, even in multiplayer.

Mechanics
Every ship has two abilities which are mostly weapons but sometimes offer other utility, using abilities drains battery that needs to recharge once its depleted. The weapons vary greatly from heat seeking missiles to canister mines and boarding teams, The diversity of weapon types combined with the different characters of the ships means that controlling ship and playing in each matchup is challenging and unique. Some ships are more effective against others, such as the mobility of the Trandals Frigate being strong against the Scryve Dreadnought while the close range Trandal weaponry means it's vulnerable to the defensive circular attack of The Measured ships. Part of the depth in Fleet Battles comes from assembling a versatile roster of ships and knowing when to deploy each one.

The Command Ship can also be deployed in Fleet Battle combat and can be equipped with a number of weapon systems and upgrades. Deploying the Command Ship is risky as any damage taken will directly reduce the crew count and will result in a loss if the Command Ship is destroyed. The captain can choose to invest in making their Command Ship optimal for direct combat, or invest in assembly a vast and varied fleet to field.

Arena Objects
The Fleet Battles arenas contain another of objects that the players can interact with (or try not to).

*Planets
Players can approach planets to use it as a gravity slingshot to rapidly bounce off and change direction. This has the risk of damaging some crew.
*Asteroids
Asteroids are most common on the edges of the Arena, they block projectiles, impede and damage passing ships on impact.
*Wormholes
Wormholes allow for rapid transit throughout the arena, they come in pairs and are a direct gate between the two.
*Ion Storms
Ion Storms drain ship battery for as long as a ship passes through them
*Radiation
Radiation encroaches from the edges of the arena if an encounter has gone for too long. This limits the size of the arena as ships in the radiation field will rapidly take damage.

Modes
Star Control Origins: Fleet Battles contains several different game modes for players. These range from single to multiplayer experiences both offline and online.

Single Player
This mode sets players against a pre-selected fleet of ships controlled by a computer opponent of varying difficulty levels. The player can select any ships for themselves and their opponent within the point limit and can go on to choose from a variety of difficulty levels.

Local Match
Designed for local two-player games. This mode allows two players to fight using two different control schemes (keyboard or controller) with pre-selected fleets of ships.

Custom Match
Custom Match allows players to configure the map size, map type, Fleet Points and amount of objects that spawn in the arena.

Unranked Match
The first standard online multiplayer mode. Once a player has selected their fleet they are placed into a queue until another player can be found.

Ranked Match
The second standard online multiplayer mode. This mode works just like the unranked match mode, however, a win or a loss will count towards a player's score on the metaverse leaderboard.
While lacking the mobility or durability of other ships, the Earthing Cruiser is equipped with powerful heat seeking Nuclear Missiles left over from the Cold War. The Cruiser's secondary weapon is a short range point-defense laser system that is able to intercept approaching projectiles, asteroid, or other object within close proximity to the Earthling ship. The Point Defense Lasers offers excellent defensive capabilities, but is heavy on battery emergy which leaves the Cruiser unable to fire.

The Captain
You are the captain of Earth's first prototype, interstellar starship with a mission to save the world. Star Control doesn't give you instructions on how to do that other than that it must be accomplished at all costs. Thus, a great deal of the game is focused on how you accomplish your goals.

The Captain
You are the captain of Earth's first prototype, interstellar starship with a mission to save the world. Star Control doesn't give you instructions on how to do that other than that it must be accomplished at all costs. Thus, a great deal of the game is focused on how you accomplish your goals.

Ship Upgrades and Customization
Resources earned from exploring planets can be used to upgrade the player's command ship.
About
Star Control games have always had a mode that lets players select a ship and take it into one-on-one battle with an opponent.

The Faster-Than-Light (FTL) technology used by Star Control and the aliens of the region is called Hyperspace. In Hyperspace, the captain can rapidly travel to other star systems or intercept other ships also traveling through hyperspace. Travelling through Hyperspace still consumes fuel, and players can upgrade their Hyperspace Drive to allow for more rapid movement throughout the galaxy.

Galaxy Map
The Galaxy Map can be viewed to see all the Star Systems and their names throughout the local region of space and be used as reference for navigation. Many clusters of stars are linked together within a perimeter represented by a unique color, this depicts a region of Stars that make up the homeworld of an alien race.

Autopilot
Selecting a location on the Galaxy Map or a reference in the Captain's Log will give the option to deploy auto pilot which automatically flies the ship towards the target destination without the need of manual input. Players can also adjust time dilation to speed up the time it takes to travel large distances in Hyperspace. However, the command ship can still be approached by enemies while in Autopilot.

Precursor Starbases
The only known permanent structures within hyperspace are the mysterious Precursor Starbases. The captain can land on the Precursor Starbases to refuel, upgrade the Command Ship, and use the Hypergate network to rapidly transit to any other Starbase in the region. The use of Hypergates allows for travelling between vast distances that would otherwise be impossible or laborious.

Planet Exploration is one of the core features of Star Control: Origins and is required to collect resources and interact with many quests. There are over 70 different planet classes and thousands of unique planets. Some contain life while most do not.

Scanning Planets
When the captain visits an alien world, they can review the world by scanning it from Orbit. Scanning the planet reveals all the collectable resources and objects of interest, gives a break-down of the planet data and displays any threats. The Captain can review the information and deice whether or not to send down crew to explore the surface to acquire resources, artifacts and make contact with inhabitants.

Planet Entry
Each planet has a specific landing zone designated for safe entry into the planet. The player controls the Lander during its descent from orbit to make sure it lands within the landing zone, the severity of the planetary determines how much Lander sway the player has to counteract. If successfully landed on the landing zone, no crew are lost and the player can begin exploring the planet. If the Lander impacts the ground away from the landing zone, it will take crew damage depending on the distance. if far enough away from the landing zone, the entire crew will be lost and another Lander will have to be launched.

Lander Mechanics
The Lander is able to rapidly traverse around a planet, but the player will have to often jump to navigate terrain such as ravines and mountains, while the booster can be used to improve movement speed. Some planets will host critters, natural or otherwise, that can destroy the player's lander. To combat critters, the Landers are equipped with a laser weapon that can engage and destroy threats. Planetary hazards such as Volcanoes and Fireballs can also be lethal to the lander, so the player will have to avoid dangerous areas of the planet or have precise timing to traverse them.

Lander Management
There are four factors to manage on the lander:
* Crew
Crew functions as the health of the Lander, if all crew are lost the Lander is destroyed and another needs to be launcher. Crew can take damage from botched landings, encounters with hostile critters and planetary hazards
* Energy
Energy is depleted from jumping and and boosting the Lander but regenerates over time. Efficient management of Energy is an important skill in rapidly exploring planets
* Storage
Storage determines how much resources you can collect in a single haul. If a Lander reaches maximum storage, additional Landers will need to be launched to collect the remaining resources on a planet.
* Weapons Energy
Firing the Lander's laser weapon drains Weapons Energy but regenerates over time.

Collecting Resources
The main reason for exploring planets is to collect valuable resources with a lander as these can be sold to Star Control headquarters or to Precursor Starbases. Distant resources are displayed to the player so they navigate between the various resources on a world. To collect a resource, the player only needs to approach it with the lander and it will automatically be collected. There are many types of resources ranging from chemical compounds to metals, with more rare resources having differing values but they are all converted into Resource Units for interstellar commerce.

Planet Data
Planets vary greatly on their conditions such as temperature, toxicity, gravity and wind strength. Not all planets are equally hospitable, most planets the player will be able to explore with little risk but some will have conditions that makes exploring dangerous. Examples of hazards include volcanos, methane geysers, fireballs and lightning. Players can upgrade their landing craft with upgrades such as heat resistant plating to allow them to explore inhospitable worlds. If a landing craft is destroyed, the craft and the crew inside of it perish and need to be replaced, but the player can try again with multiple landers.

Resource Units is the currency that allows for interstellar commerce. Star Control base, Precursor Starbases and the many aliens in this sector will also recognize and exchange Resource Units for goods and services. The most common way to earn Resource Units is exploring planets to collect resources, but Resource Units can also be gained through many other means such as alien interactions, quests and scavenging wrecks. Earning Resource Units is a core part of the game as replenishing crew, purchasing fuel and upgrading the command ship are crucial to advancing through the galaxy and the campaign.

The Captain
You are the captain of Earth's first prototype, interstellar starship with a mission to save the world. Star Control doesn't give you instructions on how to do that other than that it must be accomplished at all costs. Thus, a great deal of the game is focused on how you accomplish your goals.

Screenshot.

The captain is the only human traveling outside the home solar system, so every every contact is an alien. Most aliens are not able to communicate with humans (only the Tywom and Arilou have learned our language that we know of). However, through the Tywom universal translator, many aliens will be able to communicate with us in real-time while some may only have their words transcribed while still others are simply impossible to communicate with. Some aliens such as the Scryve and their loyal subjects will attack us on sight, while others may be more friendly and open for potential alliances and trade. Most aliens are sceptical of the young and brash humans, so earning their trust will take some work. Each race of aliens occupy a cluster of stars near their homeworld, where the player must travel to and interact with for discussing important matters such as alliances and completing quests.

Resources earned from exploring planets can be used to upgrade the player's command ship.
The game features both hyperspace and solar system travel, with a third person lander mode for resource collection and exploration of planetary bodies.

The Captain
You are the captain of Earth's first prototype, interstellar starship with a mission to save the world. Star Control doesn't give you instructions on how to do that other than that it must be accomplished at all costs. Thus, a great deal of the game is focused on how you accomplish your goals.

There are over 70 different planet classes and thousands of unique planets. Some contain life while most do not. Planets vary greatly on their conditions such as temperature, toxicity and wind strength.

The main reason for exploring planets is to collect valuable resources with a lander as these can be sold to Star Control headquarters or to starbases. There are many types of resources ranging from chemical compounds to metals, with more rare resources having differing values. Inhospitable planets will often hold the most valuable resources.

The Captain
You are the captain of Earth's first prototype, interstellar starship with a mission to save the world. Star Control doesn't give you instructions on how to do that other than that it must be accomplished at all costs. Thus, a great deal of the game is focused on how you accomplish your goals.

There are over 70 different planet classes and thousands of unique planets. Some contain life while most do not. Planets vary greatly on their conditions such as temperature, toxicity and wind strength.

The main reason for exploring planets is to collect valuable resources with a lander as these can be sold to Star Control headquarters or to starbases. There are many types of resources ranging from chemical compounds to metals, with more rare resources having differing values. Inhospitable planets will often hold the most valuable resources.

Screenshot.

Screenshot.
